Read The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard. It's a brisk read. The section on Haiti, in particular, is very enlightening. Then, the next time you run into someone who's all, "Well, what can you expect from those kind of people" or *shrug* "Those countries are just that way" you can print out a copy, wad it up into a ball, and cram it down their throat.
