Fascinating article. Highly recommended.

Skirt Chasers: Why the Media Depicts the Trans Revolution in Lipstick and Heels
by Julia Serano

Trans people—who transition from male to female or female to male and often live completely unnoticed as the sex “opposite” to that which they were born—have the potential to transform the gender class system as we know it. Our existence challenges the conventional wisdom that the differences between women and men are primarily the product of biology. Trans people can wreak havoc on such taken-for-granted concepts as feminine and masculine, homosexual and hetero-sexual, because these words are rendered virtually meaningless when a person’s biological sex and lived sex are not the same. But because we are a threat to the categories that enable male and heterosexual privilege, the images and experiences of trans people are presented in the media in a way that reaffirms, rather than challenges, gender stereotypes. Hrm. Interesting. It certainly gets me rethinking a movie like Connie and Carla. Sounsd like we're missing a few important spots in the movie and lit categories, where trans people stay trans people and nobody freaks out.

It got me thinking, too. I'll probably re-read it tomorrow, after I've let it sink in a bit. That woman is a great writer - and she definitely gave me a lot to think about. :)

Really good article. I have a few quibbles with her assessment of femininity as presentational and masculinity as performative--all gender is performed, really, and a lot of femininity is performed, even if you don't recognize presentation as a form of performance, which she sort of hints at but doesn't really come out and say.

I really really liked her statement about the media's affinity for m-to-f transpersons following on the cultural meme that all women have penis envy, so f-to-m transpersons don't challenge or subvert the gender status quo and are thus less interesting.

Excellent piece! In March Nightline broadcasted a piece on Megan Wallent, a transgender working at Microsoft. I was really upset by the mood of the piece as it seemed like the whole point was to shock its viewers. If only the producers of these pieces would also include the views of those like Serrano.

There was a trans woman working at Intel when I was there, and the things people said about her behind her back were pretty awful. I still wish I'd approached her, but I was having a lot of personal interaction issues back then. :(

Almost makes me feel bad for loving The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, but damn, I love me some Hugo Weaving in that flip-flop dress.

I have an unholy love for that movie, as well. I think it's much better than the American remake.

American remakes are rarely as good as the originals. Have you seen Ma Vie En Rose? I highly recommend it(and I have most likely mentioned it before). It's a French film about a 7 year old boy named Ludovic who is convinced that he was supposed to be a girl, but got had "lost" his other X...it's very sweet and sad, yet hopeful.

I remember when it was playing at the little theater in Davis -- it looked interesting! I'll have to Netflix it. :)

It was part of the required watching for my Rhetoric of Coming Out class. So was Priscilla, and But I'm a Cheerleader!(also a very funny film, it has Ru Paul as a guy!)

I was so excited when the end credits song of Deathproof was Chick Magnet. That song makes me happy.

A transgendered Unitarian minister officiated our wedding. And she was a pagan lesbian. And she was an awesome, very caring human being.

I'm not in the slightest way religious, but Unitarians? Are pretty damn cool in my book. :)

That's what we thought. BitterAndrew is a "principled atheist" and I don't go to church. So we thought: Unitarians accept everyone. We had to have an ordained minister perform the ceremony if we wanted it in the place we had it.

Gordon and I wanted a JOP but they didn't have 'em in Philly (weird, huh?) so we went before a judge. She was really nice. :)
