NARAL Pro-Choice America - Blog for Choice Day

Blog for Choice Day

Why do I vote pro-choice?

I vote pro-choice because I do not believe in punishing those who made choices different than my own.

I vote pro-choice because not everyone has been as lucky as I.

I vote pro-choice because, for far too many girls, Allerleirauh is not just a tale.

I vote pro-choice because I have spoken with women who lived through the old days.

I vote pro-choice because I am a woman who can speak for herself,

And I trust others to do the same.

I am a woman.

I make my own decisions.

Perhaps sometimes I sink.

Perhaps sometimes I swim.

But I am the one who will say what where and when.

The Girls Who Went Away, by Ann Fessler
I requested this from my local library.  I have a friend who grew up in the 50's, and she knows someone who really was "sent away" and forced to give up her baby.

Dirty Dancing
I first saw this movie when I was about 10 years old.  Most of it went right over my head at the time, but it remains one of my all-time favorites.  Much to my husband's chagrin.  Nice to know I'm not the only one!

Landed here through Feministing. Just wanted to say: awesome.

Thank you! Feministing was how I found out about the whole thing in the first place. :)

Would you mind if I "friended" you? It's always good to find another feminist to hook up with on LJ. :)

I wouldn't mind in the slightest! Although I feel I should probably warn you that I don't tend to post a lot of feminist content; my LJ's just a place where I squeal or snarl a lot about various and sundry things, but if that doesn't bother you, welcome!

Hahaha! Doesn't bother me in the slightest -- my LJ turns into rant space a lot of the time. I'm kind of like a magpie -- I post whatever shiny has distracted me at the time.

Can I steal this for my blog, from you? It's very clear and to the point, I love :)

Simple, direct, and to the point.

I am curious as to what (or is it who) Allerleirauh is.

Eeeee! Only one of my all time favorite dark fairy tales! It's about a young king and queen, who are both incredibly beautiful. They have a daughter. Shortly after the daughter's birth, the queen falls ill and dies. She makes the king promise never to marry another who is not as beautiful as she. Of course, the only one in the entire kingdom who is the mother's equal is the princess, and the king goes bat-shit psycho and decides he's going to marry HER. In traditional versions she uses her wits to escape. There are lots of different versions of the story.

Two of my favorite modern retellings are Deerskin, by Robin McKinley, and Jane Yolen's short story (I'm blanking on the title), which is in her Sister Emily's Lightship collection.

Ah. I've heard it called something else (which I am currently blanking on).

There's lots of different names for the story: Many Pelts, The Coat of Many Furs, Donkeyskin, etc. :)

Happy Anniversary to you, too! Geeze, it would be nice if it wasn't still such an uphill slog though, eh?

Would you mind if I "friended" you? No need to friend me back -- I like the stuff you write about. :)

Ha! I already friended you! Feel free to add me, but be warned - I only use my LJ to complain about my relationship and various other drama. The New Me is where I blog regularly and tends to have a bit more variety.

Ha! There you are! I was laughing because your LJ design didn't ring a bell for me (I thought I'd remember the dog), but when I clicked through to The New Me -- I recognized it right away. I'll friend your LJ and stick your other blog in my Google Reader. :)

Anyway - it's nice to meet another vegany-creative-ziney-feminist.
